Dietary Restrictions and Food Labels

Many people today are more conscious about what they eat and want to know how their food is produced.  There has been an increasing growth of people with Dietary restrictions. Here are some key terms on food labels that will make it easier to make the best choices for your eating habits.

Gluten- Free

Gluten is the protein found naturally in wheat, rye, barley and crosses between these grains. A product labeled as Gluten free means that the product does not contain traces of gluten. Some common foods that contain gluten include  breads, cakes, cereals, and pastas. Many people face health consequences from consuming gluten and look for products that are gluten free. Grains such as wheat, rye, and barley can be processed to remove gluten allowing for a gluten free labeled product.

Non-GMOs

Revised-Seal-copy

GMOs (or “genetically modified organisms”) are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering, or GE. This relatively new science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.

Virtually all commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit. Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights.

The verification seal indicates that the product bearing the seal has gone through our verification process. Our verification is an assurance that a product has been produced according to consensus-based best practices for GMO avoidance.
